Need
The Tyume Valley is a deprived rural area where education is the key to escaping from poverty. Most schools do not have IT facilities or libraries and many children are held back by being taught English by unqualified teachers and are unable to access the language of text books or to express themselves in English to examination standards. TVS provides centralised educational facilities at its Resource Centre but there is no public transport and schools do not have their own.
Solution
Funding will be used to improve the facilities at the Resource Centre and to buy a new minibus. Computers will be upgraded and new books and software will be purchased. The current twelve-seater bus is coming to the end of its life. It is unreliable, expensive to repair and too small. A new, larger minibus will allow more children to access the Resource Centre facilities.. It will also widen educational horizons by being used for transport to residential camps and for school trips.
Aims
To buy a new minibus and upgrade Resource Centre equipment by summer 2012.
Activities
» Fundraise for the bus via Marathon, Great South Run, grant applications and sponsorships.
Success will be... Raising enough money before the current minibus expires.
Impact
The minibus will enable schools to access IT and other facilities not otherwise available to them. In particular, children will become IT literate and thus acquire skills that will make them more employable in the future. Children will also be able to attend supplementary English classes. Success will be demonstrated by the number attaining IT certificates and those passing external English examinations.
Risk
There is a risk that the old minibus will expire before a new one can be provided. We are accelerating our fundraising to take account of this.
Reporting
We report to donors via a twice yearly newsletter.

Location
The project is located at the TVS Resource Centre, Dyamala Village, Tyume Valley, Eastern Cape, South Africa. The project serves rural schools in the area within a 25km range of the Centre.
Beneficiaries
The Tyume Valley is an impoverished area with high unemployment and high levels of HIV-AIDS. Schools are under resourced and many teachers are inadequately trained. 25 primary schools and 10 secondary schools are involved in the overall project and all will benefit from use of the Resource Centre and the minibus.
Why Us?
TVS has experience of working in this area and is already providing a service to schools. There are no other NGOs working in the same field. We have explored other means of transport an
d out reach to schools but these have not proved to be viable.
