FEED Zambia (Farming Enterprise and Employment for Disabled people)

The Big Idea

A life-changing farming project in Zambia providing farming for 80 disabled people and their families thereby affecting the well-being of up to 400 disabled people in total.

This project sprang from the needs and desires of people with disabilities in Zambia. Zambia is not an easy country in which to live if you are disabled.

• It has one of Africa's highest levels of unemployment

• 1/5 people estimated to be HIV positive

• Life expectancy is just 40, and falling

• Zambia comes 164th out of 182 in the Human Development Index

• Two-thirds of the population live below the national poverty line of $1/day

People who have disabilities are pushed right to the fringe of society, with often no access to basic services or human rights.

POWER's FEED project develops land in two of the poorest districts of Zambia, helping some of the poorest disabled people in the world. The two pilot farms are in Solwesi and Livingstone and they will accommodate and employ 80 disabled people and their families. They will be supported with training and guidance from experienced farmers to ensure success.

In time, FEED will be replicated in other areas of Zambia up to a total of 18 farms – the capital funding for a further 10 farms is already pledged by the Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission, a Zambian agency. The land for the farms is owned by ZAPD (Zambian Agency for Persons with Disabilities) and granted to ZAFOD (Zambian Federation of the Disabled) on a no-cost leases for 5 year periods. Both disabled organisations are our local partners in Zambia.

With the food they grow and sell people with disabilities and their families will have a more varied diet, children will be able to go to school, medicines can be bought, and savings can be made for the future. So up to 400 people will be affected and their well-beings improved! And instead of being stigmatised and shunned, people with disabilities can participate and contribute to the lives of their communities.
