The Grassroots Grants Endowment Match Challenge for the London boroughs of the City of London, Hackney, Newham and Tower Hamlets is an exciting opportunity to double the impact of charitable giving that strengthens your local community. Between 2008 and 2011, because of a special government incentive, every £1 that you give will be matched so that it is worth £2. 50. If you are a higher rate tax payer you may claim tax relief so the gift only costs you 75p – more than doubling your impact. Thanks to support from the Office of the Third Sector, community foundations and other organisations throughout England have £50 million to offer in match funding for donors wanting to encourage and fund the long term growth of local small charities and voluntary organisations – organisations which provide really effective support to people in need, such as friendship clubs for older people, support groups for people with disabilities and positive activities for young people.
We are firmly rooted in the local community and experts in supporting local organisations. We ensure that the grants that are made are relevant to local needs, with all kinds of additional benefits to tackle the issues that really make a difference to local deprivation.
Group funded: Mansell Street Women’s Group
Mansell Street Women’s Group received a Grassroots grant of £1,210 towards classes to teach Asian women English and to build their confidence by improving their knowledge of other cultures.
This project is a great example of responding to a local need and helping to strengthen the local community. Language barriers can be restricting in a person’s life where even the simple task of going to the local shop can seem daunting.
By improving their English and raising their awareness of British culture, this project is improving these women’s ability to interact with others and play an active part in the community. The group began in 2006 to work with Asian women in the City of London, to help increase their feelings of empowerment and reduce social isolation.
Any donations that are made, together with the match funding, are invested in special endowment funds and invested effectively for the long term benefit of people in need in the four boroughs. Every year your gift will be part of a fund that contributes to helping local people and, in that sense, it is a gift that keeps on giving.
Gifts of any size may be made, but if you give £10,000 or more, you can also be involved in specifying the kinds of issues and geographical areas where your gift may be used. Please contact us directly using the major donor enquiries button below.
