HEREFORDSHIRE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

Grassroots Grants for Herefordshire - Government incentive to double the impact of your local giving.

The Big Idea

The Grassroots Endowment Challenge for Herefordshire is an exciting opportunity to double the impact of charitable giving that strengthens your local community. Between 2008 and 2011, because of a special government incentive, every £1 that you give will be matched by a special government incentive so that it is worth £1. 92. If you are a higher rate tax payer you may claim tax relief so the gift only costs you 75p – more than doubling your impact.

Thanks to support from the Office of the Third Sector, community foundations and other organisations throughout England have £50 million to offer in match funding for donors wanting to encourage and fund the long term growth of local small charities and voluntary organisations – organisations which provide really effective support to people in need, such as friendship clubs for older people, support groups for people with disabilities and positive activities for young people.

Who have we helped?

Kilpeck Tuesday Club runs a coffee morning for the over 60’s but it is known that many potential users miss out through living in the more rural areas and not having access to transport. The club has been awarded £900 towards the cost of establishing a subsidised door-to-door transport service for up to 12 people and it is anticipated that this will be self-financing within one year’.

Herefordshire Advanced Motorists has been awarded a grant of £5,000 in order to take their ‘Skills for Life’ programme around the county. The aim is to raise general awareness of road safety and contribute towards reducing the road traffic accident rate.

Dilwyn Cedar Hall has been awarded a grant of £2,545 to provide tiered seating that will enhance the facilities available and enjoyment for the audiences at public events such as ‘Flicks in the Sticks’, talks, theatre productions, etc in this well-used village hall.

To benefit from the match funding, all donations flow through “local funders”, over 90% of which are community foundations like us.

We are firmly rooted in the local community and experts in supporting local organisations. We ensure that the grants that are made are relevant to local needs, with all kinds of additional benefits to tackle the issues that really make a difference to local deprivation. Any donations that are made, together with the match funding, are invested in special endowment funds and invested effectively for the long term benefit of Herefordshire people in need. Every year your gift will be part of a fund that contributes to helping local people and, in that sense, it is a gift that keeps on giving.

Gifts of any size may be made, but if you give over £10,000 you can also be involved in specifying the kinds of issues and geographical areas where your gift may be used.
