Greek Animal Rescue

Subsidising sterilisation of owned dogs and cats

The Big Idea

Subsidising sterilisations of owned dogs and cats in order to reduce the number of abandoned litters of puppies and kittens, by working with local (Greek) vets, who would promote the project through their clients and by speaking on TV & radio.

To start with, work with 3-4 veterinary practices which are already collaborating with GAR and which would be prepared to charge special low prices to maximise the number of potential 'clients' willing to sterilise their dogs and cats in order to prevent the birth (and abandonement) of unwanted litters of puppies and kittens.
The main reason why such a project is desperately needed (and, in due course, expand to more areas of Greece) is to prevent unwanted litters of puppies and kittens being abandoned, thus reduce the population of strays on the streets and prevent callous poisoning, which is rife throughout Greece.
In order to promote responsible dog/cat ownership, the dog/cat owners would be expected to cover a third or half the total costs, depending on their ability to pay. In cases where people are willing to have their animals sterilised, but cannot afford to pay even a third of expenses, GAR would cover the total cost.
The vets co-operating with GAR would charge special low fees of £60-£70 for a female dog, £35 for a female cat, £30 for a male dog and £15 for a male cat. In addition, the animals would be vaccinated.
