All birds need two fundamental things to ensure their survival; food and shelter. Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust’s project Bed & Breakfast for Farmland Birds aims to provide farmers with everything necessary to supply food and shelter for farmland wildlife, including the interest, enthusiasm and desire to take the necessary steps. On the back of a very successful first year, we would like to expand this project to reach a wider range of farmers and bird habitats. Unfortunately, previous funding is about to run out and new funding is urgently needed to maintain and expand this project.
Farmland bird populations have been in widespread decline for some decades. This decline is the due to a loss of nesting and feeding habitats; a result of agricultural intensification. However, Bed and Breakfast for Farmland Birds is helping reverse this trend.
The project aims to provide the fundamentals of life – food and shelter – for farmland bird species such as Yellowhammer and Tree Sparrow, whilst simultaneously encouraging farmers and other landowners to develop an interest in wildlife conservation on their land.
If the Bed and Breakfast project is going to continue into the future, more funding will be required. Further to providing food and shelter, expansion of the Bed and Breakfast for Farmland Birds project will create and restore genuine wildlife habitats on farms. Restoring farmland habitats such as hedges, ponds and small woodlands will bring many struggling species back to Nottinghamshire’s farms.
