Reducing child health inequalities in the UK

Best Beginnings began work in 2006, since then we have reached over 1.5 million families but there is still much to be done to give every child in the UK the healthiest start in life.

The Big Idea

Best Beginnings aims to give every child in the UK the healthiest start in life by acting as a catalyst for change. We create innovative, collaborative and evidence-based resources that enable families and healthcare professionals to be more effective in reducing child health inequalities.

Location

Best Beginnings' work is UK wide but particularly aims to target those parents and families from lower socio-economic backgrounds and communities who are most affected by child health inequalities. A child born in a poorer part of the Midlands is six times more likely to die in infancy than one born in an affluent part of Hampshire. Our work aims to break cycles of disadvantage by reaching audiences who may not otherwise engage effectively with healthcare information and services.

Beneficiaries

Our work benefits present and future parents, families, healthcare professionals and babies in the UK. The lives of 600,000 babies born in the UK each year can be improved by our work. We’ve already reached 1. 5 million families since November 2010 with our ‘From bump to breastfeeding’ DVD. Our forthcoming resource, Small Wonders, will be given to 80,000 parents of sick and premature babies in 2012-2013 giving Britain’s most vulnerable babies a healthier start.
