Need
Edinburgh World Heritage works to ensure the continued survival of the architecture and historic fabric of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site, proactively targeting funds where the justification is greatest. Historic Scotland and the City of Edinburgh Council are core supporters of our activities, but to to deliver a range of projects in the Old and New Town, we must raise £100,000 in 2011 / 12, £60,000 of which we hope to raise through the Big Give's Christmas Challenge.
Solution
Our approach to conservation and preservation helps to build confidence for citizens and businesses to invest in the city. In this year we will invest our expertise and energy in 25 projects. Each project will involve a different community, keep traditional skills of our craftsmen alive and encourage greater sustainability through the use of locally sourced building materials. Our solution is ongoing through the promotion of conservation-led regeneration throughout the City.

» We will support the repair of around 20 buildings within the World Heritage Site, through our Conservation Funding Programme.

» We will initiate the repair of a range of monuments and places, including St Bernard's Well and Granny's Green, in partnership with other groups.
Success will be to have facilitated a number of community projects, providing an effective framework to realise projects and attract matched funding from other partners.

Impact
To ensure the overall state of conservation of this remarkable City centre is at a level appropriate to its historic and international importance. To ensure communities and institutions of the World Heritage Site have a strong sense of ownership and take responsibility for their City. To encourage partnership-working across the City.
Risk
Inclement weather and the economy can affect the execution of repair work to historic buildings and structures. EWH keeps a careful watch of the progress of projects.
Reporting
Through regular emails, written letters and offers to go on site while the projects are under way. We will also provide before and after images to demonstrate the quality, scale and impact of the work.

Location
The project will take place within the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh World Heritage Site. This area covers some 25,000 residents and 11,000 Listed Buildings, as well as national institutions.

The area covers the full spectrum of society and our projects will benefit residents, businesses and visitors to the city. It will support the vibrant social mix within the World Heritage Site.
