Need
Opportunities to learn and interact with archaeology are disappearing fast as funding is cut across the heritage sector. There are limited opportunities to learn about archaeology at school. Higher Education provision is vulnerable to cuts, and the study of archaeology is likely to reduce. The number of professional archaeologists will reduce significantly in the near future.
Solution
YAC is a vital resource to ensure young people can continue to access archaeology now and in the future. YAC provides a vital outlet for young people to develop and explore archaeological interests which in turn enables them to broaden their horizons and develop new ambitions. YAC equips young people with the skills, confidence and knowledge to become future archaeological stewards, champions and practitioners.
Aims
For all young people to have opportunities to be inspired and excited by archaeology
Activities
» Provide the Young Archaeologist magazine four times a year
» Provide the YAC Pass encouraging young people and their families to visit and participate in heritage events
» Provide archaeology themed events to help support the learning and participation of young people in and about archaeology
» To inspire and support young people to follow their interest in archaeology so that they can become tomorrow's archaeological advocates and stewards
More young people joining YAC and going on to study or particpate in archaeology as adults.
To support individuals to share their knowledge of archaeology with young people
Activities
» Support the YAC volunteer Branch network to set up Branches and to run Branches effectively
» To run training for volunteers in effective and safe operating practices for working with young people
» To help set up opportunities for young people to develop their own self-confidence by providing opportunities for participating in archaeology
» To build capacity in the archaeological sector for working with and sharing information with young people
Mor volunteers running more YAC Branches, providing more opportunities for young people to get involved locally.
Impact
More children will be supported in their interest in archaeology, leading to greater to build the next generation of archaeologists. This will in turn lead to more young people participating in community archaeology and becoming advocates and stewards for the UK's archaeological heritage.
Risk
Child safety risks are alwyas a concern, but the CBA has set up a system of ensuring that all volunteers working with young people through YAC undertake a full CRB check.
Reporting
Reports (quantitative and qualitative) - annually or more frequently if needed.
