Need
Over the last two years, the Chinese government’s intolerance towards any political activities by the Tibetan people has escalated and they have intensified their “patriotic re-education campaign” throughout Tibet. Various methods of repression are used including regular arrests and detentions. Many people are resorting to desperate means to highlight the repressive nature of the regime they live under, including a growing number of self-immolations.
Solution
To provide relief and rehabilitative grants allowing access to basic sustaining items such as food, clothing, travel costs and medicines, or ongoing education and support so that Tibetan prisoners of conscience can support themselves and their families.
Aims
To provide relief grants in cases of immediate and urgent need.
Activities
» Identify eligible prisoners of conscience with the help of our local partner agency.
» Assess need of each applicant.
» Distribute financial grant to applicant.
» Follow up/evaluate grant to applicant.
Success will be evident in the successful distribution of financial help to eligible prisoners of conscience and the immediate material improvement in their lives.
Impact
Our project will change over time to reflect the political, economic and social situation on the ground in Tibet. If the political situation changes, there may be less need for immediate relief grants and more of a focus on education and retraining individuals to help rebuild their lives.
Risk
There are huge risks involved in identifying and assisting people who are opposing the Chinese regime in Tibet. By working with a trusted partner organisation on the ground, we can minimise those risks and keep key details anonymous and secure.
Reporting
By post or email normally, but we would ask donors what method of communication they would prefer and how regular that communication should be.
