Need
The difficulty in moving ex-street kids on into independent living because of the abscence of any framework of training or support around them.
Solution
We are building, equipping and developing a centre called the Ihumure Vocational Training College specifically aimed at equipping ex-street kids and other poor youth in vocational skills. This will provide these young people with skills and qualifications to enable them to access employment as well as addressing the problem of a skills shortage in Rwanda.
Aims
Training participants in the vocational and technical skills needed by employers in Rwanda.
Activities
» Through training in welding, plumbing, electrics, building, car mechanics, hairdressing and joinery
Success will be entry into employment of graduates
Developing entrepreneurial skills enabling students to develop their own businesses.
Activities
» Part of the training will be cross-curricular and focus on literacy, ICT and business development skills
Success will be graduates setting up their own businesses
To transform the community by strengthening the future generation
Activities
» Enabling children and youth from the poorest areas of Kigali to access training in this way will have a transformative impact on their communities.
Success will be soft indicators in the community. Testimony from familes in these areas has already indicated that trannsformation through the street kids project has taken place
To create self sustainable institution that will help us to help more needy youth.
Activities
» Develop social enterprise businesses as spin-offs from the training
» Open the college to fee-paying students who will subsidise the ex-street kids and other poor students
» Develop a scholarship/sponsorship scheme for those unable to pay.
Success will be a balanced finance sheet.
Impact
We would expect a reduction in street kids numbers equivalent to those going on into employment, a feeding back into poor communities of financial and social progress via their employment and a boost to the Rwandan work force and business community of skilled workers. It is unlikely that we would invest the time and finance into measuring these and would conclude from the success of the project above that these results would follow.
Risk
Problems in building in terms of permits and finance have been tackled through the creation of a project manager taking a 6 month work sabbatical to hlp set up the project. Problems in UK-Rwanda partnership have been dealt with through a memorandum of understanding between ourselves and Rwandan partners
Reporting
Major donors will receive reports agreed at the time of donation. Donors will receive regular newsletters.
